Dissociation

Looking at its Latin roots once again helps with this term: “dissociatio” means “separation” or “dissolution.” When we disassociate, we are dealing with the disintegration of a molecule. For example, when salts dissolve in water, they break down into their ions. So sodium chloride separates into...? That's right, Na+ and Ci- — ions, which are then bound to the ion exchanger.
