When different or similar atoms join together to form a chemical compound, this is called a MOLECULE. The term can be traced back to the Latin word for “moles” = mass; MOLECULE is often also translated as “small mass”, and rightly so: MOLECULES only reach a size of around 10-9 meters, i.e. a billionth of a meter. The most well-known molecule is water: H2O.
