Finally, another self-explanatory term: RETENTION describes the ability of a membrane to retain water constituents. How likely it is that a particular substance will be stopped by the separating layer can be expressed using the so-called retention rate: 98% of sodium chloride particles (common salt) with a relative molecular weight of 58, for example, are prevented from continuing to flow by a reverse osmosis membrane.
