Deionization, also known as full desalination, is a process for removing dissolved ions from water. The aim is to produce almost completely pure water that is free of minerals and salts. This is achieved by using ion exchangers, which remove cations (e.g. calcium and magnesium) and anions (e.g. chloride and sulfate) from the water. In a two-stage process, cations are exchanged for hydrogen ions and anions for hydroxide ions, which then combine to form pure water (H2 O). Fully deionized water is required in numerous applications, such as in medicine, laboratories, the food industry and for heating and cooling water circuits. It prevents corrosion, deposits and other damage in sensitive equipment and systems.
